BIRDING ABRA MALAGA – CUSCO

DAY 01: CUSCO – ABRA MALAGA – OLLANTAYTAMBO.

We are leaving from Cusco early morning to Malaga high pass. We will begin birding Malaga from Eastern flank for finding high Andes birds such as: Rusty-Fronted Canastero (endemic), White-Tuffted Sumbean (endemic), Chesnut-Breasted Mountain-Finch (endemic), Creamy-Crested Spinetail (endemic), Bearded Mountaineer (endemic), in this first day we will have the chance to see the Royal Cinclodes (rare, maybe We have hundred spices between Peru-Bolivia), for that we will take a walking route where we’ll see others spices like: White Browed Tit-Spinetail (endemic) local in Polylepis gynopsis, over the way will be possible to observe others common spices of bird of the high land, we have the Ash-Breasted Tit-Spinetail, Tawnny Tit-Spinetail, Giant Connebill , Paramo Pipit, Andean Hillstar, Blue Mantel Thornbill, Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Ash-Breasted Sierra-Finch, plúmbeos sierra-finch Puna Tapaculo, etc.

DAY 02: OLLANTAYTAMBO - ABRA MALAGA – CUSCO

This day we’ll start very early because we will go to the other flank of the high pass, here will be possible to see: Mountain Wren, Inca Wren (endemic), Marcapata Spinetail (endemic), Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant, (endemic), Parodi’s Hemispingus (endemic), this flank of the mountain is mostly cloud forest ; in this area We will find a variety of bird in mixes flocks such as: Andean tanagers all of them are associated with mixes species flocks in canopy of humid montane forest the most common are: Scarlet Bellied Mountain-Tanager, , Blue and Black Tanager, Rust and Yellow Tanager, Silver-Black Tanager, etc.

Other interesting group found mostly in low dense vegetation stream edge, bamboo thickets are the antpitas, they are one of the most difficult birds for watching even when they are close to you for example: Red and White Antpita (endemic), rufous antpita.

Also is possible to see many hummingbird on the route they are from the 4000 m.a.s.l. (about 12,000 feet, like Blue-Mantled Thornbill, Andean Hillstar and others in cloud forest side such as: one of most conspicuous is the Sword-Billed Hummingbird for that impressive long bille and another spicies of hummingbird: Chesnut-Breasted Coronet, Scaled Metaltail, Sapphire-Vented Pufflet, Amethyst-Throated Sunangel, and many others kind of bird like, Cetrine Warbler, Black Throated Tody-Tyrant,), Sclater’s Tyranulet, White-Rumped Hawk, Doublé-Toothed Kite, White-Throated Hawk, (rare) Sharp Shinned Hawk, Variable Hawk,etc.
